Flea & Tick Season Is Here! Are You Ready?

April 09, 2020

SPRING IS FINALLY HERE WHICH MEANS LONGER DAYS, BETTER WEATHER, OUTDOOR FUN, AND UNFORTUNATELY, THE START OF FLEA AND TICK HIGH SEASON.

We all know fleas and ticks are irritating to your dog, but did you know they can also cause a variety of serious health problems?

Flea bites can be painful and itchy, but some dogs also have an allergy to flea saliva which causes red skin, scabs and hair loss. Fleas also transmit serious infections that include tapeworms, cat scratch disease, haemobartonellosis and even the dreaded plague - a disease that killed ⅓ of the European population in the Middle Ages!

Ticks are no better, as they can spread Lyme Disease, Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and a number of other serious diseases.

Prevention is always better than treatment, so here are three simple things you can do to start the season off the right way.

1. Prepare your Property for Flea & Tick Season

Fleas & ticks love warm, moist and shady areas with plenty of organic debris.  In order to discourage these unwelcome visitors:

  • Keep your lawn, trees and bushes well trimmed and free of debris
  • Seal garbage containers to stop wild animals that carry pests from visiting.
  • Don’t let your dog drink from the birdbath, as fleas from birds love to live there

2. Regularly Check your Dog for Ticks

Walks through the forest or even long grasses in the park are prime areas for picking up unwelcome ticks.  Check your dog in the most common areas that ticks like to attach to including:

  • Under the tail and groin
  • Between the toes
  • On elbows and between front legs
  • On and in ears, and even on their eyelids!
  • On elbows and between front legs

Deer ticks can be as small as a sesame seed, so be sure to look carefully!

If you find a tick, use a tick removal tool and be sure not to squeeze or crush it as the fluids inside can enter your dog's bloodstream and transmit an infection.

3. Use A Preventative Treatment at All Times

Stopping fleas and ticks before they start is by far the best strategy and the optimal way to do this is to use a preventative treatment.  When used correctly, a preventative treatment will greatly reduce the chance that your dog suffers from a flea or tick infestation.

While there are a myriad of options available, including pills, collars, powders and topical treatments,  we prefer a  chemical-free preventative like EnviroCollar because it’s effective while also being safe for your dog, your family and the environment. Get the flea and tick season started off right.  Take the steps above, and enjoy the sunshine and great weather soon to come!
