Ramp Up for The Start of Flea & Tick Season

April 09, 2020

Spring Is In the Air!

THE WORLD IS EMERGING FROM WINTER IN AN ARRAY OF GREEN LEAVES AND COLORFUL FLOWERS.  UNFORTUNATELY, SO ARE SOME OF THE BUGS THAT PESTER OUR PETS!

Depending on where you live, fleas and ticks may still be a distant dread or a constant threat to us, our pet’s health and thus, our homes. Both fleas and ticks are most active in warm, temperate climates, generally summer/autumn, even year- round in some parts. At some stage in their lives, our pets will encounter some parasites no matter how healthy. Understanding these tiny creatures and how to eliminate their presence on our pets is something we all struggle with.

All About Fleas

Fleas are flightless insects that torment many pets even transmitting diseases such as the cat scratch fever, canine tapeworm, mycoplasma and of course, plague. The most common flea found on dogs and cats is the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) that feeds on blood.

Fleas can also infect humans with these diseases, particularly if that person is immuno-compromised. There are about 2,000 species of flea and while we may get bitten occasionally by one, it’s rare that we will actually be infested. Flea bites cause a range of signs from minor irritation, occasional scratching all the way to severe itching leading to self-trauma. If a pet has flea allergy dermatitis then even the saliva from just a single bite can cause intense inflammation. In very rare cases, usually in small puppies, kittens or sick pets a flea infestation may lead to anemia.

Ticks and Your Pet

Ticks are small arachnids whose abdomens swell following a blood meal from a mammal or occasionally birds and reptiles. Ticks are even more active that fleas in terms of spreading disease, capable of transmitting at least 12 diseases between animals and humans, including Lyme’s, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Anaplasmosis.

Tick’s are also responsible for the disease “Tick Paralysis” which is caused by a neurotoxin in its saliva that causes weakness, paralysis and even, death. There are different species of tick across North America, preferring long grass and wooded areas with plenty of wildlife traveling through. Deer are the primary hosts of many ticks, but they will hitch a ride on us or our pets, in fact, a recent study has shown that pet owners are at increased risks of tick exposure and we may find them on ourselves more often than on our pet.

What To Watch Out For

We are all aware of the signs of fleas on our pets. Ticks, on the other hand, can be difficult to detect as they infest animals in small numbers. The bite from a single tick can cause disease, but it may take up to 21 days for signs of the disease to manifest, so prompt attention to any change in our pet’s behavior or appetite is needed to treat any of these diseases in the early stages.

Part of our regular grooming schedule should be checking pets with a fine-toothed, flea comb. As fleas are almost microscopic, they’re hardly even visible on a white- furred animal so to combat this, wipe the contents of the comb after brushing on a damp white cloth or tissue. If flecks of reddish-brown appear on the cloth, this is “flea dirt”, digested blood indicating treatment is necessary. Checking pets for ticks is a little more intensive, after hiking in a high-risk area, careful examination is needed. The most common places for a tick to latch on are between toes, around the ears, eyes, tail, under the collar or in skin folds.
